Your First Appointment

We are pleased to welcome you as a new patient to our office. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our office and give you an idea of what to expect.

At your first dental appointment, we will discuss with you your past medical and dental treatment, your reason for seeking care and what you desire for results. A thorough oral examination will be completed. If necessary, films and a bacterial culture will be taken.

Our practice is distinctive because we focus especially on the infectious bacteria that cause periodontal disease. These bacteria are transmissible to your family and friends and can affect your overall health. We have pioneered innovative state of the art antimicrobial diagnosis and treatment that sometimes may include laser therapy. This results in improved long-term health and more successful results to save your smile.

Following your examination, we will make a detailed study of your problem by way of clinical examination results, x-ray interpretation and other diagnostic procedures necessary to achieve an effective plan of treatment.

At your second appointment, we will discuss your existing periodontal condition, necessary treatment to correct these concerns, time required and the fee for treatment. Your questions and participation in this conference are most welcome. Your spouse is especially invited so that they can have their questions and concerns answered. We are very interested in providing this time because your understanding in vital to the success of your treatment.

Clinical Examination

The periodontal examination gives the dentist a complete picture of the periodontal condition of the patient’s mouth. This information is needed before an accurate diagnosis can be made. The oral exam is supplemented with information gained from the dental x-rays.

A major focus of the exam is to determine how much bone loss has occurred. When healthy, there is generally a 2-3mm space between the tooth and the gum. The space deepens as bacterial plaque causes bone deterioration and penetrates down the side of the tooth. This deepened space is called a pocket.

Each tooth is measured at six placed surrounding the tooth in order to determine the pocket depth. Normally anesthesia is not needed for this charting, which gives the dentist a blueprint of periodontal changes.

Other important information is collected during the examination so an accurate diagnosis can be made.

  • Gum recession: The amount of recession added to the pocket depth determines total bone loss
  • Furcations: Bone loss in between the tooth roots that compromises the prognosis
  • Amount of attached Gingiva: Without adequate attached gingival, recession will occur.
  • Occlusion (bite): Excessive forces on teeth may increase the chances of bone loss
  • Tooth Mobility (looseness): Generally indicates inadequate bone support or bit problem
  • Patients oral Hygiene: Poor brushing and flossing will greatly compromise the long-term results
